This is a very informative First Drive by Motor Trend as they had all three versions of the 2013 GL-Class available at the same time!
“It’s already the best-selling three-row luxury SUV in the U.S., and with the latest generation model, it’s now the unquestioned technological leader in its class.”
“The new big Benz is also bursting with electronics that the competition can’t match, which mind everything from handling to safety to comfort.”
“The Mercedes diesel has smooth and linear power delivery, maybe more important it’s quiet, and the lower frequency NVH from the diesel is less noticeable in the cabin. It didn’t feel slow at all until we got in the other two GLs.”
“As other first tests have proven in the past, it is more about power density than peak numbers. The two relatively small turbos on the Mercedes spool up fast, making peak torque by 1500 RPM and delivering it all the way to 4000 RPM”
“The GL550 isn’t just faster than the competition — it takes three-row SUV acceleration to a new level of bonkers. I am a bit scared of what soccer moms will be able to do in the upcoming 550-horsepower, 560-lb-ft GL63 AMG.”
“The real magic, though — one that can’t be expressed in numbers — is the ride and handling mix. All three of our testers were equipped with Mercedes active suspension, which includes constantly variable damping, air springs, and an Active Roll Cornering System that utilizes a hydraulic coupling in both front and rear anti-roll bars to control roll stiffness. In Comfort mode, the big GLs are one of the best-riding SUVs on the road, with a ride very similar to the S-Class.”

The Power Easy-Entry function for the second row seat is not available for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. The option code has been removed from all of the vehicles scheduled for production. Both sides of the rear seat will still tumble to allow access to the third row and the manual mechanism is easier to use than the previous generation. We do expect the option to be available starting with the 2014 model year.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was at the dealership yesterday for our pre-launch training. This was my first look at the redesigned GL-Class and it was everything I expected it to be! The GL-Class looks sleeker, sportier and a lot more luxurious. There are strong similarities to the all-new ML-Class and I love everything about that vehicle!
This particular vehicle is a 2013 GL350 Bluetec in Arctic White with Grey MB Tex Interior. It has the Premium 2 Package, Driver Assistance Package, Lighting Pacakge, 3-Zone Climate Control, Rear entertainment system and the optional two-tone 20″ Wheels.
You can see the controls in for the 3-zone climate control on this vehicle. This is the factory rear-seat entertainment system that allows for DVDs to be played from the front or the rear of the vehicle.
The 2013 GL-Class is scheduled to arrive Spetember with the GL450 and GL550. The GL350 Bleutec will follow in October and the all-new GL63 AMG in the first quarter of 2013!
This is a 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL450 in Steel Grey…with a Paddle Board! My customer added the roof rack basic carrier (MSRP $300 from your local parts department) to the roof of the GL450 last week in anticipation of a paddle board trip. I think it makes the GL look very sporty! Thanks for sharing Chad!
The 2013 GL63 AMG has been officially announced! We expect to get ordering details within the next few week and the first models should be delivered early in 2013!
What we know so far:
Order early or you’ll have to wait to get your hands on this beauty!
We just installed our first iPad docking stations in a 2012 GL450! For this particular client we installed an iPad 2 dock behind the driver seat and an iPad 1 dock behind the passenger seat.
Here are the empty brackets. They are very slim and I hardly noticed them while I was driving the car.
iPads and USB charging cables are not included. The cables were $5.99 at my local Fry’s Home Electronics.
The iPads slide into the bracket so that the headphone jack, volume controls and plug line up with the openings in the bracket. The iPad 1 is fatter than the iPad 2 and will only fit in the specific iPad 1 bracket. The iPad 2 will fit in the bracket for the iPad 1 but is more stable in the bracket that is specific to the iPad 2/3.
The iPads can be tilted up or down to adjust the viewing angle.
The brackets can be rotated vertically for reading.
Our first experience with the docking stations was great! The system was easy for the technicians to install, looks great in the vehicle and offers our customers another way to entertain back seat passengers! You can listen from the iPad out loud or through headphones. Also, vehicles with Bluetooth Audio Streaming should be able to pair to the iPads and stream through the vehicle sound system. Each docking station costs about $400 plus the cost of installation. That is a pretty good savings over the $1950 Rear-Seat Entertainment system, considering you can take these screens with you!
The second generation 2013 GL-Class is scheduled to arrive in the US in September. I am really excited about the new exterior and interior, the improved fuel economy and some of the new options! Everything is preliminary at the point and subject to change but here is what we know so far!
New Standard features:
The interior of the new GL-Class is a big improvement. It looks plush and luxurious! The MB-Tex interiors are now perforated for comfort but still do not allow for Ventilated Seats. The Leather and designo interiors are not perforated unless Ventilated seats are ordered. The designo interiors are STUNNING! I am very impressed!
