Happy New Year!

Rolling into the New Year like this laid back bear in a C63! Time for a little rest and relaxation before coming back for an exciting 2018!

Georgia Tag Renewal – Now Available at Kroger!

  • Georgia_2007_license_plate

If you are anything like me, you have forgotten to renew your tag. Now it is your birthday and you have an expired tag and inevitably this will be the day you see every police car in the county! You can pay it online but there is a fee and it will take a few days to arrive in the mail.

Well, this problem has been solved! I found this great article on AJC.com and I thought I should spread the word!

  • Residents use the kiosks by scanning their Georgia driver’s licenses or their mailed vehicle renewal notices.
  • The kiosks give residents a self-service option to instantly print their tags, including stickers for vehicle license plates.
  • The kiosks are located at Kroger stores in DeKalb County at 6678 Covington Highway, in Newton County at 5341 Highway 20 South and in Cobb County at 3240 South Cobb Drive.
Mercedes-Benz Parking at Mercedes-Benz Stadium!

Mercedes-Benz Parking

One of my clients sent me this picture from a recent Atlanta United Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This is the Mercedes-Benz Loyalty Lot located just steps from Gate 1! She said it looked a lot like the dealership parking lot. Maybe you can do a little shopping for your next car while you are there!

Here are the details:

The Mercedes-Benz Loyalty Parking Lot is located on Northside Drive between Magnolia and Rhodes Streets and closest to Gate 1 of the stadium. The Mercedes-Benz Lot will be made available for online reservation on a first come, first serve basis starting at 12 noon two days prior to each ticketed event at the stadium, and the reservations will close when all available spots are reserved.  Starting at that time, you can seek to reserve your space on http://parking.mercedesbenzstadium.com.  There is no charge for these spaces.  All vehicles entering the lot to park MUST BE Mercedes-Benz vehicles ONLY. If you are not driving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle you will be asked to park elsewhere.  Only those with a reserved spot, parking pass from Park Mobile and driving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle will be able to park in this lot.

If you happen to park there, send me a picture. I know I’ll be reserving my spot the next time I am headed to the Stadium!

Hurricane Irma and the Mercedes-Benz VPC in Brunswick

With Hurricane Irma likely to hit the east coast and an Evacuation Order issued for coastal Georgia, it is likely that the vehicles currently at the port in Brunswick, Georgia will remain there for longer than expected.

Under normal circumstances a ship will dock in Brunswick, unload over a day or two, process through the Vehicle Prep Center over a week to 10 days and then ship to the dealership.

A hurricane will slow down all parts of this process. No ships in, employees under evacuation orders and bad conditions will all contribute to longer than average processing times.

Just a little insight into all of the moving parts in getting a Mercedes-Benz…

Rally North America in my C43 Cabriolet!

Road Rally America

For my driving vacation this year I participated in Rally North America – Rally Appalachia 2. This event is a essentially a three day scavenger hunt with 70 other teams. We started in Virginia and ended in Alabama. Each morning we lined up, received a list of checkpoints and bonus point opportunities and then hit the road! It was totally up to the teams which checkpoints and activities they saw each day. The rally raised money for Hope For the Warriors which is a charity that supports veterans and their families as they transition back into civilian life. The whole rally raised nearly $150,000 this year!

Rally North AmericaThere was a huge variety of vehicles participating in the rally. Team Grey market brought their gorgeous G320 and ran it on all the tracks! The GLS on the right was actually a rental car and they said it was excellent for this event! There were a lot of American Muscle cars, a few exotics and some classics like a Corvair and vintage Suburban! It was so fun to meet other vehicle enthusiasts and trade stories.

Deals GapAlong our route there were classic automotive must-dos like the Tail of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This rally is not a race. It is for points, not time, so speeding is discouraged but fun is not! My new C43 was a delight on the 318 turns of the Tail of the Dragon and the shady roads of the Blue Ridge parkway were great with the top down.

C43 sedan and cabrioletCoincidentally another team had also just picked up their new C43! Team Euro Trash arrived in this Brilliant Blue C43 sedan and we spent two days rallying together. They look good as a pair (and sound even better)!

road rally americaWe saw parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Extra points for Welcome to the State signs! Fun fact, if you turn around immediately you get the Welcome to the Other State sign too!

C43 VIRTrack time on two iconic American tracks was included with the rally. We did quite a few laps on Virginia International Raceway (behind the G-Class – check out my Instagram video) which is a curvy, twisty course. The last day we were able to do laps on the oval at Talladega Superspeedway! That banking is serious business. 130 was my top speed in the C43. I had the top town! Other participants reported hitting 150!

Overall it was wan excellent way to see the US, with other enthusiasts,  while raising money for charity. A win-win-win! Thanks Rally North America!

Mercedes-Benz in St. Lucia!

I recently took a vacation to the island of St. Lucia. While I was there I met a couple of Mercedes-Benz owners who showed me their babies. This island is hard on equipment! Keeping them running and in good condition is certainly a labor of love!

The Mercedes-Benz Masters Experience

If you watched The Masters Tournament this weekend you might have noticed that Mercedes-Benz is a major sponsor! As a part of that sponsorship, dealerships are sometimes offered spots to send their customers to the tournament for a few days of luxury. A Mercedes-Benz Enthusiast from Massachusetts attended this year and was kind enough to share his Masters Experience with us! The following is in his words. Thank you Mike!

The text came from Michael Collins, GM of Mercedes-Benz of Portsmouth, NH. “Do you like golf?” My wife and I have done business with Mike for several years, and we have become friends. It was innocuous enough, although I thought it was still a bit cold to get out for a foursome. Imagine my surprise when I found out we would be going to the 2017 Masters Tournament as guests of Mercedes-Benz.

Upon arrival at the Augusta Airport, it was clear that everything would be first class for our 3 days in Augusta. We were brought to the gorgeous community of River Island in a gleaming new GL 450, where all of the guests of MB would be staying in private homes. Our lodging was a gorgeous 7,500 sqft home with 4 other couples. I wasn’t sure what to expect, sharing a home with other people, but we truly had a fantastic time with one another and will be staying in touch!

Tuesday morning was a perfect spring Augusta day. We were brought to the Augusta National Golf Club (in a Mercedes Sprinter, of course) and there it was- the iconic Magnolia Lane. From there we were dropped off at the Firethorn Cabin, MB’s hospitality cabin at the course. There we enjoyed breakfast and lunch, sparkling private bathrooms, and the ubiquitous open bar. With flat screen TVs everywhere you looked, there was no reason to go out to the course (yeah, right!)

We spent much of Tuesday on the gorgeous green grass of ANGC. There we saw the golfers skipping the ball on the water on 16, Amen Corner, and the Pro Shop (which was well organized chaos). Wednesday was a rainout, so much of the day was spent at Firethorn, hanging with our new friends and enjoying a cigar and drinks on the front porch. Each night had entertainment, but the final night was the cherry on top; a private concert by Lady Antebellum for the MB guests!

There are many words to describe the experience- bucket list, once in a lifetime experience, etc. Overall we had a wonderful time with first class service and accommodations, and made many new friends. What a privilege to be able to attend. Thank you MBUSA!

Georgia Taxes on Leases – HB340 TAVT Bill Passed

Standard Alternate Gerogia TagA few years ago Georgia changed how vehicles were taxed for both purchase and lease. Instead of paying a county sales tax and annual ad velorum based on vehicle value, a one-time Title Ad Velorum Tax (TAVT) was assessed. The TAVT was calculated on the sale price of the new vehicle or the “book” value of the used vehicle regardless of purchase or lease. It is currently 7%, having increased slightly over the last few years.

Recently the state legislature worked on a bill to restructure this system. There were several other components to the bill during negotiations and many of those were removed. Used car dealers were hoping to remove the book value portion of the taxation. There were also provisions related to state vs. county distribution of the taxes collected. The only portion of the bill that passed the house and senate relates to taxation on leases.

Upon signature by the Governor, effective July 1, 2017, TAVT on leased vehicles will be calculated based on the total of lease payments, rather than the full value of the vehicle.

As someone who leases a car every three years, this is great news to me! As someone who helps other people lease cars every day, this is even better news! This should lower future lease payments for the average buyer by a noticeable amount.

Currently if you buy or lease a $50,000 car you will be assessed $3500 in TAVT. If you divide that into a 36 month lease and add interest it is over $100/month in taxes. The new rules would mean that a $700/month base lease payment would be assessed $49/month in taxes.

There is some confusion about the effective date for the new taxation. I have heard both July 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018. I will look for clarification on that in the coming weeks.

Here is a link to the full text of the bill.
