A few years ago Georgia changed how vehicles were taxed for both purchase and lease. Instead of paying a county sales tax and annual ad velorum based on vehicle value, a one-time Title Ad Velorum Tax (TAVT) was assessed. The TAVT was calculated on the sale price of the new vehicle or the “book” value of the used vehicle regardless of purchase or lease. It is currently 7%, having increased slightly over the last few years.
Recently the state legislature worked on a bill to restructure this system. There were several other components to the bill during negotiations and many of those were removed. Used car dealers were hoping to remove the book value portion of the taxation. There were also provisions related to state vs. county distribution of the taxes collected. The only portion of the bill that passed the house and senate relates to taxation on leases.
Upon signature by the Governor, effective July 1, 2017, TAVT on leased vehicles will be calculated based on the total of lease payments, rather than the full value of the vehicle.
As someone who leases a car every three years, this is great news to me! As someone who helps other people lease cars every day, this is even better news! This should lower future lease payments for the average buyer by a noticeable amount.
Currently if you buy or lease a $50,000 car you will be assessed $3500 in TAVT. If you divide that into a 36 month lease and add interest it is over $100/month in taxes. The new rules would mean that a $700/month base lease payment would be assessed $49/month in taxes.
There is some confusion about the effective date for the new taxation. I have heard both July 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018. I will look for clarification on that in the coming weeks.

In the world of Mercedes-Benz there are common vehicles and then there are Unicorns. These mythical beasts can be new or pre-owned, modern or classic but what they share is rarity. If you are looking for a black E350 sedan with Premium Package I can show you 20 right now. If you are looking for a E350 wagon with Lighting Package and Distronic? Unicorn! You have to plan ahead to get that kind of equipment!
Most wagons in the US market are a little bit of a unicorn but the ultimate is the AMG wagon! These sleepers were almost always special order and rarely make it back to dealer inventory. This 2013 E63 wagon was originally sold in California. Now it is here in Georgia proving that you have to travel far and wide to catch up to a unicorn!
The E-Class cabriolet has not been gifted with an AMG engine in a number of years. It is a rare person that wants to go that fast with the top down! However, when you catch a glimpse of this unicorn it is mystical. This particular cabriolet looked great inside and outside! If you are going to own a unicorn you must take care of it!
Some unicorns are bigger than others. When Mercedes-Benz makes a special version of the classic G-Wagen you know it is going to be snapped up! The famous 6×6 is rarely seen in the wild but always photographed. The Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet version is currently making waves in Geneva. The 4×4² just arrived in the US and is the biggest unicorn on the lot! We’ll see a very limited number in the US and probably just one year of production.
The moral of the unicorn story is that if you know what you want, you have to get it fast! Colors, options, engines, body styles and production volume are all changing all the time. If you love something, order it!
I have posted videos about setting your clock for years! It’s pretty easy at this point.
But this year a few of my colleagues made videos and I love them. Thank you to Dong and Daniel!
It has been a few years since Mercedes-Benz asked us to have cars inspected before the end of the lease. Well, it’s back!

Simply call, make an appointment for them to come by your home or office, and then you are ready to turn it in!

This has come up a few times recently so I thought I would highlight the issue.
Most Mercedes-Benz sedans now have a switch in the glove box to lock the trunk. When this is slid to the locked position the trunk will not open with the key, the handle or the door switch. It is not broken!
The idea is that you can then manually lock the glove box with the blade key, take that with you and now a valet/child/spouse can’t access these areas.
Hope that helps!
I was driving a GLA loaner car the other day when the fuel light came on…in three places! And then I had to back up to a different pump after I had opened the fuel door and got a handy warning about that too! I can’t imagine how anyone could run out of gas with all of this notification.
Also, notice how the warnings have a little arrow to remind me about where the fuel door is located. I had forgotten that it was on the drivers’ side on the GLA/CLA. Handy!
The 2017 E300 is the first car in a few years with a different Homelink system. Here is what worked for me.
Step One: Hold one of the buttons on the bottom of the Mirror (1,2, or 3). Light flashes.
Step Two: At the same time, hold The Button You Want to Program on the remote. Light flashes quickly.
Now your mirror is programmed but you must teach the garage about it. (Love this guy!)
Step Four: Press and then release the button on the mirror that you programmed (1, 2, or 3). It might work! If not, press and release again. My garage works on the third try.
You did it! Nice work!
(Thanks to Chris in SC for helping me solve this mystery!)
I have had a bunch of orders arrive this month and they looked great! Without exception the new owners are thrilled to have a vehicle that is exactly what they wanted and unique in the marketplace. The customers waited between 60 days to 8 months for these masterpieces!
2016 GLC300 – Black with Espresso Brown Leather
2017 GLS550 – Palladium with designo Espresso Brown Leather
2016 AMG GTS – Mars Red with Black Dinamica and Red Accents
Don’t settle for something you don’t love! If you have a strong vision for your new car I can make it happen
A client of mine in South Carolina sent me this testimonial recently:
“We had one heck of a hail storm here yesterday evening. My GLK was parked outside with one of the other members of the white Mercedes club (that’s what you call it when everyone in the family has a white Mercedes), and there was a Chevy and a Honda on either side of us when it hit. Once the sky cleared, the Chevy was as dimpled as a golf ball, and the Honda took a few dents too, but both of the Mercedes were unharmed!”
Mercedes are just built of better stuff!
There are lots of ways to buy a new Mercedes-Benz and one of my favorites is custom ordering! In 60-120 days you can have the car of your dreams.
People often ask if there is an extra charge. There is NO Charge to custom order your new Mercedes-Benz!
There are lots of ways to order.
Possibility One: Use the Build Your Own section at MBUSA.com and then e-mail it to your salesperson. They can order the car just like you want it and keep you informed as it progresses.
Possibility Two: Go to the dealership, like something there and figure out what changes you would make to LOVE it! Maybe there is a designo interior that speaks to your heart. Perhaps you’ve been waiting for CarPlay or another technology to arrive. There are lots of little tweaks that can make a vehicle special.
Possibility Three: Be First! You can order a car that has not yet been released. Right now we are ordering C-Coupes, S-Class cabriolets, and 2017 E-Classes. I know you haven’t seen the car in person yet, but you know you’re going to love it. Why not order early and have your perfect vehicle arrive when it is first released for sale?
So, you don’t have to settle for what is at the dealership. I would be happy to custom order the Mercedes-Benz of your dreams!
