Mercedes-Benz has been building hybrid vehicles for quite awhile. We have sold limited numbers of ML450 Hybrid and S400 Hybrids in the US. Recently Mercedes-Benz has announced that they will be adding to our Plug-In Hybrid choices!
““On average we will bring a new plug-in hybrid to market every four months,” said Johannes Reifenrath, head of product strategy and planning at Mercedes-Benz Cars.”
“The S 500 plug-in will offer the performance of a V-8 with the consumption of a four-cylinder engine, according to Mercedes. Additionally, it will give motorists the option to drive emissions free for up to 33 kilometers when its 8.7 kilowatt hour lithium iron-phosphate battery is fully charged, which takes anywhere between two to four hours.”
“Part of the savings from the S-class plug-in comes from its predictive energy management system that uses GPS data and radar sensors to calculate a route-based adaptive strategy for when to best drive electrically, use the combustion engine only, or both in combination.”
More choices is a good thing, right?
“…We recently spent a few weeks with both cars to find out which green machine does the better job of combining fuel-sipping efficiency with the sky-high levels of refinement expected in an S-Class.”
“Diesel-powered Benzes have come a long way since then, and the S350 Bluetec is a fine example. Its turbocharged V-6 is completely modern and clean-burning, sending 240 hp and a whopping 450 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic and Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.”
“According to our data, the S350 and S400 are tied in almost every test evaluation.”
“Around town, the hybrid feels plenty strong, and its stop-start system is one of the smoothest applications we’ve experienced.”
“The Bluetec, however, has already proven how well it shines out on the open highway. Last summer, editor-at-large Angus MacKenzie drove an S350 from L.A to San Francisco and averaged 29.2 mpg on the 913-mile trip.”

Mercedes debuted the “Tree of Innovation” commercial during the Oscar presentation on Sunday. You may have seen it a few times since! It is just a small sample of all the green technology that Mercedes has brought to the marketplace!
The 2010 S400 HYBRID has met the Federal Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit Program requirements as a hybrid motor vehicle. As a result, all purchase customers qualify for the $1150 tax credit. This is regardless of income and tax situation, claimed on your Income Tax Return, and applies only to purchased (not leased) vehicles.
Tax credit amount : 2010 S400 HYBRID $1,150
I also just finished some training on the S400 HYBRID and it is very impressive. With a base price nearly $20,000 lower than the only other competitor, the Lexus LS Hybrid, and this tax credit that the Lexus can’t use, the S400 is a fantastic value. The technology for the new Lithium Ion batteries is groudbreaking and allows us to have a normal sized trunk as opposed to toting around a trunk full of batteries. Also, at 19 MPG in the city the S400 offeres a 26% increase in fuel economy over the S550.
I have two S400 HYBRIDs in stock here at Atlanta Classic Cars and would be happy to demonstrate the benefits of a luxurious, efficient and affordable S-Class.
(Don’t forget…Mercedes-Benz diesels also qualify for tax credits.)
